While growing up as a little boy, my mother often encouraged me not to fight. She would buy me new blue jeans and plaid shirts for school and warn me not to get grass stains on them. In addition, it was common to get holes in the knees of one’s pants, and they were not popular or in style back then—so patches were one's friend. However, during recess, someone invariably wanted to wrestle and try to throw me down. Trying to keep my blue jeans and shirts clean was exceedingly difficult, but I did it. Nonetheless, one of my brothers did encourage me to fight on one occasion. Two boys were constantly bullying me. Therefore, I would often come home crying and tell my brother about the occurrences. Finally, he got tired of me crying--so he found the boys, made me fight them, and they never harassed me again. My brother called it a good fight—I fought well despite getting whipped. Nevertheless, I learned an unbelievably valuable lesson that day. My brother was trying to teach me not to go around fighting people per se—but some things are worth standing up for self-respect, human rights, marriage, and family. That is, one must learn how to pick their battle and fight for what one believes is fair and proper. Likewise, Paul describes the Christian struggle as a wrestling match (Eph. 6:12a). However, you are not struggling against people; but demonic forces that are harassing you and trying to keep you from the benefits of the Kingdom of God (Eph. 6:12b). They are trying to flip you — trying to throw you down and get your ropes of righteousness stained with the dirt of this world. Therefore, you must stand and fight well—fight the good fight of faith. The Father God is not a deadbeat Dad. He has given you everything pertaining to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). Though you receive these things by faith. Equally, good parents supply their children with everything good for them. That is food, clothes, healthcare, education, and shelter. All that the parents have belongs to the child or children. Similarly, it is the Father's will to give you the Kingdom. Everything that you need is in the household of faith. For example, Israel was given the promised land for inheritance even though it was occupied. However, they had to fight for their possession and obtain it by faith with God's help. Correspondingly, you have to fight the fight of faith to receive the promises of God. You may ask, "What is faith?" Faith believes that you already have what God says, according to His Word. For instance, (1) you must believe that you are healed because God's Word says that you are healed even when you do not look or feel healed; (2) you must believe that you are loved because God's Word says that " He would never leave you nor forsake you," even though you are feeling lonely; and (3) you must believe that your needs are meet even though your bank account reads zero. Because God's Word says, "He would supply your every need." The world's motto is, "Seeing is believing." The Christian's motto is, "Believing is seeing." So, remember this faith formula: ‘Faith’ equals ‘Prayer’ plus ‘Believing’ equals ‘Seeing’ (F=P+B=S). Moreover, let me give you a few faith techniques—faith punches to use the next time you are under attack from the adversary: (1) healing--left hook; (Ps. 103:1-5), (2) finance—right-cross; (Phil. 4:19), (3) husband/wife issues—left-right combination; (Col. 3:18-19), and (4) Loneliness—uppercut; (Ro. 8:35-39). Try these faith techniques the next time Satan tries to throw you down. Finally, Paul advised Timothy to endure hardships and overcome the trials of this world by faith. That is, he must fight the good fight of faith if he is going to inherit eternal life. Eternal life is an excellent thing to stand up and fight for—a battle that must be won. Thus, John adds, "For this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith" (1 John 5:4).
